Peggy McNulty, soprano, has earned a Masters of Music Degree with a voice pedagogy specialty from The Catholic University of America. She studied at the Juilliard School of Music for two years and during the summer of 1964, Peggy studied voice at the Aspen School of Music with Jennie Tourel. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree with a speech major and music minor from the University of California at Berkeley.
Peggy was treasurer of the Virginia NATS Chapter in 1970 and she is presently a member of the Board of Directors. In 1980 she became professionally certified as a Teacher of Voice by the Music Teachers National Association.
For over 35 years, Peggy has operated a private voice studio in McLean, Virginia, teaching both teens — approximately three-quarters of her studio — and adults. Many of her teens have continued their vocal studies in colleges, such as The Oberlin Conservatory, Rice University, Northwestern University, New York University, James Madison, and William and Mary in Virginia. In 1995 one of her students won the MTNA National High School Competition at the National Convention in Spokane, Washington. Many of her students have also won prizes in the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Voice Competition, which she has chaired for 30 years. As a member of NATS, Peggy has attended many National and International Conventions. Her students have also been winners at the Virginia State Auditions and have attended the Mid-Atlantic Regional Auditions.
Her adults perform in local choirs, such as the Washington Women’s Chorus, The Cathedral Choir, New Dominion Choir, Master Chorale, etc. Many of them are active soloists in their church choirs and as well as professional choir members.
One of her former high school students, Ana Gasteyer, was a cast member of Saturday Night Live. In January 2006, Peggy had the privilege of seeing Ana star as Elphaba in the Chicago production of “Wicked.”
Peggy has performed as a soloist in Christian Science Churches for 35 years and has presented many recitals at venues in the Washington, D.C. area, including the Alexandria Lyceum, Meridian House, The Arts Club, Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, etc. In the 1970s, Peggy studied voice with Todd Duncan, for whom one of the NATSAA prizes is named. She currently studies voice with George Gibson and she coaches with Gillian Cookson. Peggy is a performing member of the Friday Morning Music Club and a very active member of the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association. By presenting several benefit solo recitals, Peggy has raised over $6,000 for the Music Teachers Voice Scholarship Fund.
